EM Theremin with giant coils! for sale

EM Theremin circuit with BHC( Big honkin' coils) I built a few years ago. Works beautifully. All the inductors are hand wound. I just finished building a keppinger tube theremin, so I wont be need this one any more. Perfect for some itching to build a beautiful theremin cabinet. Includes coils, working circuit board w/ power supply transformer and front panel controls. You will need a cabinet and antennas.

Chobbs anytime someone puts up a theremin design to build or buy completed without following up with a few basic sound bytes [b]Red Flags[/b] go up.

I know you are a master builder and a sound .mp3 link is no more difficult to add.

My own sound has issues currently and to hear what others are achieving with their circuit designs would be great. A theremin is a sound with all the other magic falling into place.

Would anyone buy a used car on a vacant lot without listening to the engine run?

You're totally right. Any tips for how can i post sound clips here? Do they need to be on youtube or something? I had enough trouble with the images.

To my ears, it sounds like any other Ew/EM. Linearity and range is about the same as the other EM theremin I built, with the more orthodox, small miller antenna coils listed in the parts list.

There are many things about a theremin that a potential buyer will want to know other than the timbre of the sound. With an original one-of-a-kind instrument there are no testimonials from other owners to guide consumers.

If I were you, I would try to find someone who can play your theremin and I would make a video. This way, a viewer can get an idea of linearity, volume configuration, response, and the sound of the instrument in a musical context.

If you were buying a violin, you would want to play it before writing a cheque. If that wasn't possible, you would probably want to see and hear a competent violinist play it.

Just a thought.

Here is an quick test of the EM that I recorded last night. Nothing amazing. Please dont judge my playing from this one. The pauses are me adjusting the tone/wave knobs to show off the timbre ranges.

This was recorded with the theremin played through a 10w Crate practice amp and the line-out to my macbook/ garageband.
This EM circuit has the raised output resistor for guitar amps.

Now you guys want a video too!

BTW, Anyone who is interested (and can get to NYC,) is welcome to come over and give it a test drive.

OK, now I'm confused. I was about to ask if the Ew/EM theremin was AKA the Moog Melodia, but then I noticed the chip in your photo of the coils and you mentioned a range of timbres.

So if it's not a Melodia then what is it AKA?

Its an EM theremin, as in Electronic Musician magazine. Bob published a how-to build article in in the mid '90s. Im sure there is a link to it here in the schematics section. More or less an early DIY version of the etherwave. New EW's have some inductor value and component changes, but it is essentially the same circuit and sound.

The big coils have been taken and soon will be off to their new home. I still have the working circuit board, tho'. Will need the miller three-section rf chokes for the antenna coils.(4x 10mH, 2x 5mh and 1x 2.5mH) If anyone wants it, let me know, otherwise is going in my old project graveyard- a parts/junk bin in the basement.
