I am in my bedroom now and my friend is playing with my Theremin and Looper - I don't think he's ever played a professional Theremin before and it's amazing to see what someone's first time on one is like, especially if they are very much musically inclined.

What he's doing sounds like Steve Reich on a wildly detuning analogue synth. It's insane, all beepy and chattery and vaguely percussive. My head is bouncing.

What was your first time like? It seems as soon as people are confronted with the thing ideas pour out.

It was really great.

It took forever for my EWPro to get built and arrive from Moog. I was resorting to watching the Clara Rockmore video from them whenever I was alone and playing air theremin along with it.

It finally arrived at work with a worrisome dent in the box. I snuck out early unable to concentrate or keep my hands off the box and rushed home.

I didn't sleep that night and barely at all the next. It was so much fun just to play it the world seemed to disappear. Music and sound were happening around me in a new way, and distant musical understandings returned and connected again, it felt right. I improvised with my drone boxes, played along to Pachelbel, Bach and Dolly Parton, and just played with a delightfully rich instrument.

And it remains delightfully rich. I'll never regret getting that instrument, it was one of the best things I ever did.

Hope yours was fun too, thanks for the question.
