Looking for Theremin to Build

Hello readers,

I've had a problem with availability of the Bourns Inductors for the EM Theremin. They are no longer in stock at Newark or Farnell, and I can't find them any where else. Considering that I can't get the other TOKO inductors with a high enough Q factor, and now I don't have access to the Bourns Choke inductors, does it sound reasonable to try a different schematic with more readily available parts? Or, is there a decent enough tolerance for replacement inductors so that I could find substitute parts and still have the EM Theremin function?

I've looked at the schematics from Theremin World, but I don't know which one would be good for me to build with parts that are still in circulation.

I'd like a theremin with a pitch and volume control antenna. What are some of the schematics out there that have both volume and pitch control and parts that I can currently purchase?

I've looked a little at Art Harrison's 145 theremin. Is this theremin a realistic possibility? I'd like my theremin to have the traditional antennas, not plates. I know that that the 145 theremin can be changed to use traditional antennas, but how is the performance if I were to use the traditional antennas?

Thanks,
Dan

I forget which inductor you were looking at.

There are 19000 TOKO A7BRS-T1040Z 100uH inductors
in stock at Digikey. These have a Q of 80.

My problem now is that Newark and all other places are out of stock of the JW Miller/ Bourns RF-Choke inductors.

Can the 145 Theremin work well if traditional antennas are used instead of the plates? Does anyone recommend the 145 Theremin to build?

It seems like what I'm looking for (as long as it works well with traditional antennas), but I'm just not sure if I've overlooked anything.

Thanks,
Dan
