Grrr. Is it worth paying twice as much for an Etherwave pro as a starting theremin? I have heard so much good publicity about the linearity of the E-pro in comparison with the E-wave. Is it really that much better? Is it worth the extra wait?

I think it's more like 4 times as much.

If you're a beginner, I advise you just get a standard Etherwave. You can always sell it on ebay (you'll probably get most of its value, I don't think they sell at much of a discount) and upgrade to a Pro when you feel ready.

I just went through this dilemma myself, and last week I ended up with the Pro. Is it worth three times as much? I don't know. I can tell you that after playing them back to back, the Pro has better response and linearity, and a better tone. At the same time, if I hadn't had the chance to try the Pro, I probably would have been happy with the standard model. Now I will be eating bologna sandwiches for six months!

That being said, this is my second theremin. I started out with a much less expensive model (theremax) to learn on. It might be a good idea to start with the standard model and see if you really like playing or not.

Hope that helps!

If you're completely new to the theremin, I would also recommend starting out with something on the level of the Etherwave or the Kees Enkelaar theremin. It's a tough instrument to play, so make sure it's something you want to stick with before you shell out the big bucks for a 'Pro.

That said, the 'Pro is a sweet sweet instrument. I hate to say it, but I almost like it better than my Ethervox MIDI theremin because of its portability & style. The sounds are very similar between the two (in my opinion).

I still play my Etherwave most of all though. I think my arms just got used to its pitch response and somehow like it best. Plus, if I'm playing it out somewhere, I'm less concerned about damaging it since it's much cheaper to replace.

Sure. That seems sensible- I can save up when I'm playing the Etherwave. . .
