Having been a wood worker for many years I cannot stand to leave anything unfinished or unpainted. The coils look great but I am not sure if I should coat them with any type of clear coat. I don't want to use shellac or varnish but I am thinking about a clear Polyurethane.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Definitely spray cans! I'm not sure why I was thinking shellac or vanish should be avoided. I think I read that comment on a tesla coil building site. Thanks Chobbs for the insight. I do like the spray shellac.
I like spray shellac best, but have also used a clear acrylic varnish (crystal-clearwith good results). Poly is probably ok, too.
Unless you want the "candy apple" look, I'd stick with spray cans and avoid the brush.
I saw a video on YT posted by a guy winding a rather large secondary for a Tesla coil when researching for ideas for my coil winder. He used some sort of lacquer or varnish (not exactly sure what) that he applied with a credit card. Looked rather nice. I think the "candy apple" look might have a cool retro appeal, though I think I want to go for smooth myself.
Bcourson, what did you end up using, and has it worked well?
