Me and my good friend, thereminbrostom, think there should be a section of the site dedicated to theremin workout videos, and we would be happy to organise and host it. Who would like to get involved?

What interests me is what type of exercise would marry itself well with the music of the theremin?  I would think either yoga or jazzercise to be the most likely.

Thanks for the feedback Ian, I definitely agree with you that jazzercise would fit the unique vibes of the theremin well.

Personally, I think that a slowed-down version of one of the popular exercise crazes (Zumba, etc.) would also befit the theremin.

While on first thought this might seem kind of nutty, one should look at the similarities between conductor's motions and playing the theremin. There are many theories why conductors appear to have one of the longest lived professions - even going so far to suggest it detoxifies the thoracic tract, better circulating lymph and in the process enhancing your immune system as well as circulatory system.

Having a set of practice pieces that require different motions and speeds may well make a lot of sense. Then again just practicing a couple hours a day in and of itself may well be excellent exercise and help improve health.

Just holding your hands out in front of you for extended periods can be good exercise. I wonder if playing the theremin with wrist weights might also add to that. And when you take those weights off I bet you will have enhanced expressive feel (like a golfer or baseball player using a swing weight for practice).

I am unclear whether the THEREMIN WORKOUT section is intended to be dedicated to conventional workouts to music produced by theremins, or to using the theremin itself as a workout device (waving arms & hands in the air, etc….).

Yoga and jazzercise seem unlikely musical idioms for the purpose since neither classical Indian music nor jazz can be played on the theremin.

*** It is possible to play some conventional slow melodies on the theremin while other instruments (piano, bass, drums etc.) provide a background jazz feel, but the theremin does not lend itself to jazz solo work.

I completely agree, rkram53; playing the theremin really could help to improve health, and that is what we hope this proposed workout section will achieve.

That is indeed a very good question, coalport, and I think the decision is best made by everyone. So, should the workouts involve music produced by a theremin, use the theremin as a workout device, or perhaps a mixture of both? Thoughts?
