I'm starting this thread for all the beginners out there who don't have the ability to create accompaniments for themselves but would like to practice with some music appropriate for the theremin (kind of the old "Music Minus One" approach). I'd be happy to start creating a set of accompaniments that can suit our needs and maybe I'll post some of the ones I've done up for my own practice as well.

If you would like any specific pieces please add a request here (public domain pieces only please). I'll post them from time to time as I have some free time to create them. Perhaps others would be willing to contribute as well.

I thought this might be a valuable service I could provide our Theremin World community.

Rich, I'm getting ready to record accompaniment tracks of the Faure Pavan and Over the Rainbow on classical guitar, for my own use.  What is involved in posting them here?

Beth,

What exactly are you looking for then if you are going to record accompaniment yourself on your guitar?

You want the score? For the Faure (which is Public Domain), you can find that here if you want the full score:

Faure Pavan

Someone actually posted an arrangement for guitar and flute that may be very interesting to you:

Faure - for Guitar and Flute

I can put this guitar part into a notation program and create a guitar accompaniment easily with some guitar samples as well - but it sounds like you just want the music so you can play it yourself? In that case I think the links about should be of help.

Now "Over the Rainbow" is a horse of a different color if you excuse the reference. It was published in 1939. US copyright law at this point will have this coming into public domain in December of 2038. So it would be illegal to post this piece here.

Hope this helps. Is this what you were looking for?

Beth,

Sorry I think I misread your e-mail. You want to post tracks you create? That also is a horse of a different color. First, don't post the Arlen for your own well being. It will be illegal though no one will likely come after you. People that post copyrighted pieces on the internet do so at their own peril, but the reality is that unless you are obviously making $ from it, the lawyers at most will usually just have youtube slap a commercial on it so someone gets some $. There are people and webbots that do nothing but search for copyright song infringements on the internet. But certainly we don't want to post copyrighted material on thereminworld.

I'm not sure that thereminworld.com has the ability to post .mp3 files. If they do and Jason is reading this I'd like to know how to do that myself.

But you can do this, which is how I distribute my music I wish to let others enjoy. (you could of course post it on youtube or create a public dropbox account too, etc). Go to www.imslp.org and create an account for yourself. You can then post stuff you write on your own composer page you create under common copyright. Or in the case of the Faure, you can go to the first link above which is the Pavan page and you can post the .mp3 arrangement you have made under the recordings tab (or synthesized/MIDI tab if you are wanting to post a MIDI file). Then you can just let us know what that link is and anyone here can go there to hear and use it. It may take a day for them to vett the file and make sure it not a copyright infringement.

Now when you post it on imslp.org you will be asked what kind of common copyright you want to use. Pick one that says non-commercial. This means people can use it, but not to try and make money from it. Of course you can say they can use it for any purpose including making money if you are so inclined. Note that imslp will reject anything they feel is either not in the Pubic Domain or is not written by the author posting it giving common copyright use permission.

Under common copyright you are giving up some rights but normally keeping others (primarily keeping the right to make $ from your works - or put another way restricting anyone from using your work for commercial gain). From there, you can choose to let someone edit or make arrangements of what you post - that is use it for any non-commercial purpose, or you can be more restrictive and say anyone can use it for non-commercial use but they can not make any changes to what you post. Or you also have the option to say - use it for any purpose you want including making $ from it (but I would shy away from that option).

Thanks so much for all the info, Rich.  So here's what I'm working on:

I have been practicing a guitar accompaniment for the Faure, in fact I used the guitar/flute sheet music you referenced above.  I'm going to record it for my own theremin practice purposes.  I figured it might be useful to others as well, if it comes out halfway decent.  I've also got a piano accompaniment for a Schubert piece I think people would like in the works.

I've done a jazz arrangement for guitar of "Rainbow," again for my own practice and non-commercial performance use, which I was also going to record.  But it sounds like it's dodgy to post that anywhere due to copyright issues.

So it sounds like the short answer is to get an account w/imslp and post public domain mp3s there, and put a link here.  This will hopefully all happen after a)  I clear some time in my schedule to make the recordings and b) I figure out how to make decent recordings (big learning curve for me).  Honestly all this is harder for me than learning to play the theremin in tune!  Another thing I want to get around to doing is a YouTube channel -- I have quite a few other compositions I'd like to get out into the ether, but I am very intimidated by the idea of making videos.

Anyway, I appreciate all the advice!

Beth
