My interest in playing with the stereo image has been stirred (again) by a few recent developements. Carolina Eyck lately is using a gadget that is worn as a ring on a finger of the left hand that gives the option to directly send the theremin sound around a multi-loudspeaker setup. Lately also mostly remixes and some original Youtube content features 8D (and other numbers before the D) using mostly ambisonic effects used for 360 degrees VR videos, where the sounds comes from 8 directions including up and down, and which can be processed to 'virtual dummyhead stereo' for listening on headphones.
Those 8D and other D videos tend to sound like one is sitting in roundabout/carousel, the sound moves in a steady tempo around the listener.
In modern music Jimi Hendrix was probably the first to use stereo panning to move his guitar sound around the stereo image. At the moment I'm experimenting with the autopanning effect on my Loop Station, setting different tempi for subsequential takes. I've also done some experimenting while postprocessing looper tracks with some stereo enhancing and a free virtual dummyhead VST-fx plug-in available at https://www.pcjv.de/vst-plugins/stereo-plugins/. I've tried to keep it subtle and in a way that it also works well listening on speakers.
This track started off with low droning theremin, but that ended up quite low in the mix, and I find it difficult afterward to make out what is the theremin and what is my voice even myself. The music is all moving around in the stereo image, only the fieldrecording of singing robins is left static.
