Hi gang,

I guess necessity is also the parent of forum revisits.

Does anyone have a video of changing the fuse in the power supply of the Moog Etherwave Pro?

My EW Pro died last night and won't turn on.
As I was bent over and plugging the ear piece I heard the tiniest of 'pops' and the instrument went dead and won't power up.
(It was really hot, around 95 F in here at the time.)

I am guessing *and hoping* it is a fuse in the power supply.

Long past memories are reminding me the power unit is buried under absolutely everything else, and you have to take out all the guts to get to it.
The prospect of doing this myself is not one I'm crazy about, but I have a gig next week, and don't know of anyone near by who could fix it.

Any ideas or suggestions are very welcome!

keep on playing\fixing! - omhoge

Thierry is the only one I know of that has the gonads to dig into that instrument. I myself would not even repair someones EWS. My first guess as you hear popping is the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply went bad, also taking out other components. If there is a fuse which I doubt its blowing is a reaction to a failed circuit which prevents fire.

I always wondered what people do spending that much $$$$ and this situation will happen at some point.

Good Luck, no gig next week or dig out your EWS.

Christopher

Edit: The issue with theremins should never be the cost, rather is anyone on planet earth able to repair it.

Thanks oldtemecula

You borrow someone's EW Standard :~)

Well... a church spent a whole heck of a lot more than I did on my EW Pro on their pipe organ I was playing last week, and it broke in a different way, it started to cipher and wouldn't shut up.
I can't think of any instrument that hasn't needed tuning, restringing, or complete revival at some point.  Hopefully the music they make while they can is worth it.

Thanks for the well wishes, fingers are crossed!

Am ready to guide your hands through Skype/Zoom/FaceTime if needed. There is an internal fuse in European (metric) 5x20mm format. Replacement (if you have a spare) takes about 20 mins.

Am ready ...

Thierry, Thanks a Million! for the offer to help.

I need to get a new fuse first though.

Any suggestions as to what the proper type, part number or the name of it is?

Once I know, I'll try and get one overnighted to me.

I sure hope a simple fuse replacement works for you, fuses do not blow because they are in a bad mood or it would have been accessible from the outside. You heard component break-down popping so look at the ends of the electrolytic capacitors for bulging or leaking. While in there I would just replace them. It is good it had fuse protection as that protected the diodes.

You’ll need an 1 Amp 250V Slow blow fuse like this: https://www.amazon.com/Zephyr-Slow-Glass-Cartridge-5x20mm/dp/B075SNVSNY/ref=sr_1_3?crid=37M9UUIGG5N9C&dchild=1&keywords=fuse+1amp+250v&qid=1596058560&sprefix=Fuse+1A%2Caps%2C334&sr=8-3

omhoge, could you snap a few interesting pix while you're in there and post them here?

Hope the surgery goes well!  You're in likely the best hands in the world with Thierry!
