EtherWave Volume antenna range

It seems like my Etherwave volume range is shrinking and shrinking.  I have zero volume about 3cm from the loop antenna, and maximum volume... maybe 10cm from it.

Does this sound extreme?

Should I take the cover off and re-tune its inductor?

I also had a narrow volume field on my EW+. Opened it up and tuned the volume inductor in 5 minutes. Very easy and straightforward, no sweat at all... unlike the pitch inductors, which I would be VERY nervous touching!
