Tuning Claravox in modern mode

I'm able to tune my Claravox in traditional mode but having problems in modern mode. So far I've only been able to reach zero beat about 8 inches from the pitch antenna and then the pitch rises again so my playing field is way too narrow. No such problem on my Etherwave.... Any suggestions? I've watched the short tuning video on YouTube and that doesn't help.
