I half agree with that. Yes, a fancy box is no guarantee of top notch electronics, but on the other hand the overwhelming majority of high end products come in a high end enclosure. Having lavished a lot of expertise on the insides, would [i]you[/i] house a decent product in a shoe-box?

Personally I am very content with my etherwave standard - Moog have been steadily improving the standard so it has pretty good linearity and tone. I am happy to wait for either the next Moog product - it was very encouraging to see Moog appear on levnet a few months ago asking what people wanted (the consensus seemed to be "an ethervox without MIDI, and without the 'snappiness' of the ePro volume loop") or for the next generation of analogue/digital hybrids which - by all claims - offer perfect linearity.

(It does surprise me that a little cottage industry rehousing etherwave standards in lovely boxes hasn't sprung up.)

Hi Gordon. You make a fair point about cottage industries. I've often considered what it might be like to put the Standard's electronics into a nicer cabinet.

At least Burns has started offering the same circuits in some very interesting cabinet designs, which is in my view the first instance of theremin manufacturers doing what the consumer electronics industry does.

Hopefully, more theremin manufacturers will start doing this.

I've thought a great deal about "repackaging" the innards of the Moog theremins for years. One of the main triggers was the controversy over the design of the Etherwave Pro.

As I said, I do like the player's side of the Etherwave Pro; the back not so much.

The standard Etherwave is certainly a worthy instrument, although the cabinet is a tad boring. But, that is what keeps it affordable.

The big problem for me is I have the ideas but lack the time and tooling to bring them to fruition.

I predict that we Thereminists shall see a wonderfully playable Theremin from the Chinese,(Communist?,Fascist!;#(),Republic,soon.
I, further predict that this 'new' Theremin will offer all of the great features of the Moog Etherewave Pro, plus MIDI control. The Etherwave Pro is easy to copy by commercial communities that willingly bend their way around United States of America and International Copyright Laws.
We could all have a great Theremin for $300.00!
