In short - it affects the shape of the pitch field detrimentally. Mr Pringle keeps it for show but swaps in a regular rod for playing.

Wow, that is all very interesting. I suppose my interpretation of Bradbury's purpose for mentioning the Theremin was completely wrong, but I was only basing it on the other themes in the book. It is a clever reference, though.
