Sticky: Roll Call! - 2009!

Hello,

My name is Eli. I've been lurking around Thereminworld for about a year now (since purchasing an Etherwave standard) without posting much.

I live in Asheville, NC - home of Moog, which is great since I can just drive my Theremin down the road for repair when I do something stupid like use a metal allen wrench to tune it ;)

I grew up as a self-taught bass player, playing in several bands until I got sick of very loud electric guitars (and the people who play them), sold all my equipment, and took up the solitary life of the Theremin, Hammond organ, synthesizer and drum machine.

I just completed the requisite diamond speaker baffle. I'll see if I can get a photo on here. I've got to show someone who might find it interesting.

I like that a lot! It's minimal, it's a great match for the instrument and as you point out, a diamond speaker is absolutely classic. It gives an otherwise utilitarian box a touch of class.

Hmm. I wonder if Moog would find it interesting. My personal view is that it would make a splendid accessory for the etherwave. (And easy to ship: Supply your own matching mic stand.)

As far as the sound goes, I can hear great potential but the speaker I used rolls of a little too much on the high end (Eminence
Alpha-8A 8") so it sounds kind of muffled at the moment. The whole thing's made of oak and has a "wood" quality to the sound. I plan on putting a tweeter and crossover into it so as to achieve the full, buzzy effect.

Since the baffle is already cut for an 8-inch diameter, you could just drop in a nice, powerful 8-inch coaxial car speaker like a Pyle or Pioneer and call it a day. The tweeters and crossovers are built in.

Yeah, I came across a more full range speaker right after I finished this :) The way I've got it put together It's made to EXACTLY fit this speaker with very little leaway. So I'll probably just cram a tweeter in this one. You can see the rear box here:

The outer frame is built just like a picture frame.

I was looking at this one as a prototype, tweeking some things and perhaps offering them for sale. I'm thinking it might be $200-$300 for the speaker w/ a high quality stand.
(kind of pricey for just a speaker I know, but it would be hand made, good components, and built like a tank) Any thoughts?

dae23, I currently use an Epiphone Junior, but I might be interested in one of your baffle speakers. Will you be posting any sound bites for potential buyers? Also, youu may want to think about designing a custom case to go with this little gem.

Um, yeah...what I meant to say is that I am currently using an Epiphone Junior with a home-made speaker. The speaker sounds like absolute junk sometimes, and it's bulky. The Epiphone stays!!
