One of the problems with the stock Tmax antenna is that, due to its shortness, it is overly sensitive to vertical motion. You might try replacing the stock antenna with a longer one (I just used a chrome sink pipe from the hardware store). This change enabled about 3 1/2 octaves of playable (linear) range.
