@RoyP:  Welcome to ThereminWorld!  This is a wonderful eclectic community of creative souls from all over the world.  It takes someone with a pretty strong sense of self to take on this instrument.  You can usually get some good info on just about any subject relating to theremin here, but you will have take any advice you get about playing technique with a grain of salt, as the approaches to playing are as varied as the personalities who take up this wonderful instrument.  I'm pretty impressed with the fact that you built your own instrument, as I fall more into the "player" camp than the "builder" camp.

@mollydad: Is "eclectic" another word for looney? It fits :)

Welcome Roy!

The remake of "day" was one of the only movies I bought without renting first. It became the first movie I ever sold after watching it only once. The only difference between it and a bucket of crap was the bucket.

I also have a fondness for Forbidden planet. I bear the name of the robot :)

As a builder you might find our new project interesting. As a group we are designing an all new theremin. Check the "Theremin construction" forum.

Rob.

This group fondness for Robbie The Robot notwithstanding, I trust everyone here is aware that composers Louis and Bebe Barron did not use a theremin in the score for FORBIDDEN PLANET.

Oh, by the way, I think my neighbours would much prefer me to be learning the bagpipes; at least they have fixed notes...

I know it's just a joke, but anyway, I bet your neighbours prefer you to learn the theremin than the bagpipes! At least the ones I know (Galician bagpipes) are fixed-volume instruments, there is no such thing as playing the bagpipe quietly. You just play loudly or you don't play at all. With the theremin you can adjust the volume as high or low as you want and you can even use headphones if necessary, so it can be a pretty neighbour-friendly instrument... if you want, of course :)

Hi All,

thanks for your welcomes.

If eclectic and loonie are in the same drawer then count me in:-)

@w0ttm-I'm happy to look at all of the forums here and although I built my 145, I'm not a whizz with electronics and had to have a few back and forward e-mails to Arthur Harrison to iron out some problems I was having with the construction. I have to say that the problems were of my doing and he was really tolerant and helpful with his replies.
I am interested in the construction of these instruments so I will keep a look out on the Theremin Construction site.

@Amethyste-I've had a look at some of your theremin playing videos and I love the playing!
One of these days I might put up a vid of me playing something that you can all laugh at!

@AlKhwarizmi-I think the Gaitas are fantastic!

@coalport-Ocht no! Next you'll be telling us that Santa Claus doesn't exist...on the other hand, I wouldn't be so disappointed to find out that was the case:-)

Hello All!

I'm Chaz, a more than middle-aged complete novice to this instrument...

Scraped up the $$$ and recently purchased a Moog "standard", amp, mic stand and 10' -1/4" instrument cable...

Still waiting for some of the gear to arrive...

Anything else (besides practice, perserverance and patience) I'll need to get started?

Thanks!
