The guy is just looking to see if someone has a theremin for sale.

There is no need to go psychoanalyzing him or giving parenting advice. It does not matter if the child really is a little Motzart or just a kid having fun making noise. It is just a guy looking to buy. He does not deserve to be ganged-up on and chased off.

Heck, if his kid needs to stand up to this judgement and talent criterea to get a Theremin, why should 80% of the rest of us (judging from the "talent" shown in most YouTube videos) be allowed to own a Theremin without submitting a resume, pass a written test, and pay for a Thereminist licence.

Nick is a fascinating kid! Your post about his varied interests and accomplishments is amazing. I have a number of ideas as to why he is interested in origami and why he is so good at chess endgame but I guess this isn't the place for me to express them. It's off topic and I seem to be upsetting my fellow Theremin Worlders (not that there's anything unusual about that).

I was thinking of a Burns B-3 Deluxe. I am easily confused. There is "sounds like Burns". Also their are Zeps. They make references to bands, such as Lez Zeppelin, Led Zeppagaing. What did the real Led Zeppelin use?

If you're serious about getting a decent playable theremin, then the Burns B3 Deluxe is a fine choice. "Sounds like Burns" is the Burns website and ebay name. Unlike the Moog Etherwave, I believe the Burns B3 has only one voice (no timbre control).

The theremin played by Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin was probably a custom made one-off unit. There were no commecially made theremins of that type available back then. It was a single antenna model (pitch only).

The reference to the Zeppelin theremin is usually a theremin maker going by the moniker Theremaniacs. It is also just a pitch only model. There is no volume loop. The Zeppelin connection is purely a marketing tool.

PS...to "gang up" on someone implies a "gang" of two or more persons. That doesn't apply in this case. I really don't think that was his intent. [edit] Now, if he had multiple personalities...

Timbre (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/timbre) (pronounced "tamber") is the "character" of a sound. It is the mix of fundamental and harmonic frequencies that, for example, make a flute sound different than a clarinet, which sounds different than a saxophone, etc.

A theremin can have a timbre that can sound string-like (cello/viola/violin), brassy, voice-like, flute-like, or pure sine wave.
