Help Needed - emergency set list!

Some of you may remember me saying that I was starting up a new band that would be doing Sci-Fi themes and ambient space music.

Well, I haven't really done much with the project but now we have been jumpstarted.

Starbuck's is having an open-mic night type of thing and we signed up (two of us did, anyway...)

We will have an Alesis Ion analog modeling synth and my trusty Etherwave Standard (as well as possibly some circuit-bent stuff, if appropriate).

Now I need some help selecting some material. We are going to do some original material but I would like to pick a well-known, easily-recognizable science fiction theme that we could work up in a week or so.

I was thinking maybe something from TDESS but with the analog synth maybe there are some later themes that might work.

Any ideas or Suggestions?

How about the Brunnen-G warrior song from Lexx (several versions here (http://scifi.myrealm.co.uk/brunneng.php))?

It's got a strong operatic feel and is pretty catchy.

Maybe the Star Trek TOS theme?

The star wars theme would be very recognizable, although it's not the easiest piece for theremin.

I think the Doctor Who theme would sound good on the Theremin.

I think the Star Trek theme is overdone, and also it perpetuates the myth that the old tv show theme was done with a theremin.

I considered Star Trek but nixed it because I am a little tired of it.

I do the "bad guy" music from Star Wars and we are thinking about Godzilla, even though there was no theremin in the original.

I thought about Dr. Who also so I am glad that one came up. We will have more flexibility when the whole group is together.

It's not quite an answer to the question, but I also recommend teaming up with a 'normal' singer / guitarist; good if you're on your own for the day.

You can improvise it all; I've done quite a few open mic things over the years and it always works. It's good practice too and keeps you on your toes.

I haven't been here much lately but I appreciate the ideas.

I have played with "regular" musicians a few times and I am not afraif of improvisation. In fact, I have had gigs where we had no idea who was even showing with what instruments until we were setting up. That makes it interesting.

The thing is tomorrow and what we decided is to just sort of wing it.

We have some basic chord progressions worked out so it should go smoothly.

Well, the little performance at Starbuck's went really well. I played a few slightly off notes (which is to be expected from me...) but I corrected them nicely enough.

My partner in crime pulled up the wrong patch on his Roland Fanton X8 but since we were doing original stuff nobody was any wiser. (He also corredted it prett quickly too).

I played the Etherwave Standard on both songs as well as a spastic circuit-bent Texas Instruments Speak and Spell on the first number.

No video, unfortunately as the other half of the duo forgot to hit "record" on the camcorder and Mrs. Diggy forgot to take pictures. The Starbuck's girl took some snaps, though so at least our first gig together will be memorialized.

He had a blast and we willl do it again next month.

We are going to do it again this Saturday.

We still haven't worked up any Sci-Fi stuff yet but we are going to do an original Klaus Schultz type of thing with keyboard and theremin.

We are also going ot play one of my originals about a girl who wanted to kill herself and a cover of "Invisible Sun" by The Police.

Nice uplifting songs!

You may remember that haunting count at the beginning of the Police song. We were debating whether to include it and if so, how to do it and all that. We solved the problem by sampling my Speak and Read and letting it do the counting.

It sounds really great because it's an old song and that was what we all imaginined computers sounding like back then when they were ready to take over the world.
