Do you post theremin videos on youTube?

This is such a simple idea I'm surprised it hasn't already happened...

I have posted a very straightforward powerpoint (*) presentation on youTube:

Just what you need to know if you're watching a theremin video and decide you're going to become a thereminist. Which people do. Oh, yes. Have you noticed how for the last year or so there have been a lot of video game fans appearing on ThereminWorld - that's The Randy George Effect.

Then I made all my theremin videos "video responses" to it by clicking on "Post a Video Response".

Now under every theremin video of mine there is a link that says How To Play The Theremin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJI4Qv2ca1Q), and when you click on it you find out about the Theremin World forums, Spellbound, Thomas Grillo's online tutorials, a collection of some of the best theremin videos on yT, Peter Pringle's DVD and some method books.

Do your own slideshow if you want, or if you don't, please make one of your theremin videos a video response to mine, and let's help people to find help!

Well, it was either that or some really good theremin playing, but I'm not happy about lifting other people's work.

Ah, Jake Thackray. An important part of my childhood. And also Richard Stilgoe, Pam Ayres and Cyril Fletcher. Such a shame they don't have a slot of TV for comic verse these days. The Charlton family all enjoyed "That's Life". And then into the punk years - Ivor Biggun (who was also a That's Life presenter - Doc Cox) Atilla The Stockbroker and, of course, John Cooper-Clarke.

That's an excellent idea, Gordon. A LOT of people first discover the theremin at YouTube, (myself included), so having all those useful resources visible in one short video will help anyone who's interested in learning to play.

I thought of doing something similar myself (several months ago) but didn't, because as much as I wanted to promote knowledge of the theremin, I didn't want to do something that could be misinterpreted as an attempt to promote myself ... especially at that early stage in my learning curve when everything I played sounded ghastly! So far, I've avoided mentioning YouTube here at TW; I always got the feeling that although some see it as a far-reaching "shop-window" spreading theremin-awareness, others feel the mixed quality of performances does more harm than good.

I did, however, spend a long weekend last summer watching practically EVERY theremin video on YouTube and categorizing them in my Playlists, hoping this might be a useful resource for anyone interested in the theremin. After filtering out the Gakken-playing cats and squeaky beginners, I divided the best of YouTube theremin videos into about 70 categories (various theremin/thereminists etc that wouldn't necessarily come up in searches; Tak E Winds theremins for example!) I've continued to keep these playlists updated, and there are now around theremin 400 videos, (the playlists used to be in alphabetical order until some bright spark at YouTube decided people would prefer them in "recently-watched" order instead!)

I saw your theremin-resources video yesterday, Gordon. At risk of being ever so slightly negative (which I really hate to be), for such a good idea I wondered if it lacked a little visual design input; a picture of a theremin perhaps?

I might get around to having a go at something similar myself sometime, if you don't object ... although when that'll be, who knows. Meanwhile, please feel free to add your video as a response to my recent "year of ..." video; I think the two may fit well together for potential learners.

Fair enough. People have been staring at me like I had grown antennae for as long as I can remember - even when I tried very hard not to draw attention to myself, so it just feels normal now and barely figures in my calculations.

You're quite right, it is rather plain. In fact the original plan was for it to be silent too, but that didn't hold my attention at all. There was a point to my using only the clip art supplied with Keynote - if I wanted to suggest to people that they do something similar I wanted to be able to say truthfully that it only took ten minutes to throw together.

I just had a Gakken Theremin Premium since three weeks but i have the ear to recognize the scales and the notes in the air, so i had some hours of practice before being able to play it correctly.
