Really? I had the impression that a good pair of headphones would let my hear myself without disturbing others. Am I in for a surprise? Please elaborate.
Roll call!

Yup. I have an amp with a headphone out...works great! In fact, when my brother is in town, he sometimes sleeps on my couch, and I can still practice on the other side of the living room without waking him.

...line in to headphone out on a laptop works well too...I use a Moog Etherwave Pro.

since you asked...
here's my three cents.
play every day.
start and end your practice session with a play-a-long song you always get off on and can play. The Pachelbel canon in D is a great exercise piece, just playing the bass line gives you a good solid five minutes in D major workout.
dvd: I've gotten a lot and continue to learn from the Clara Rockmore Greatest Theremin Vertuosa double billed with Lydia Kavina's training video available from Moog Music. Lydia's shows you some basic ways to break up the technique and create exercises, I watch Clara's often in slow motion to see the actual formation of notes.
book: read Albert Glinsky's biography of Lev Termen "Theremin: ETHER MUSIC AND ESPIONAGE " and get the Clara Rockmore, Victor Estrada and other pdf methods you can find by searching here at ThereminWorld. If you read music you can use a sight reading exercise book or the Saxton or Eyck method books. The Takiuchi book though in Japanese comes with a practice CD that's very useful.
hope that helps with some starting ideas.
no matter what, play every day.
and please keep us posted!
