Ha, ha, ha! You have a serious case of ITA - Instant Theremin Addiction. Sorry dude, there is no cure.

Well, there may be one cure. Thank goodness you didn't find any of my videos - that would have scared you away!

hello! i had a B3 theremin for several months about 2 years ago but was not satisfied by its performance and thus sold it. the pitch would float around like crazy and the volume and pitch antennas were a bit close and would interfere at times. i could play simple melodies and scales somewhat decently. i finally ordered a moog etherwave standard about a week ago and it should be arriving tommorrow. im very excited!

I read about it a lot as a kid, although I always heard it was impossible to play, and they seemed like inaccessible things. Years later when I was more involved with the local music scene in Bristol, a friend of mine asked me to design a poster for his album launch. Although not a Thereminist himself, he'd booked Hypnotique as support, and also - since the venue itself is a cinema - a screening of a documentary on the history of the Theremin. Having watch Suzi play, and seen Clara Rockmore busting out some very complex lines on screen, I was turned around on the idea of the Theremin.

For the first year of playing I was completely unaware of the Theremin community. I started out by playing the piano with my left hand and following on the Theremin with my right, thus familiarising myself with the pitch field. After that, I started learning how to use the volume loop and taught myself by playing simple tunes, mostly Christmas Carols. After that, I used my looper (which featured largely in my synth-based live sets before this) to write my first piece of Theremin music, Rachis & Barb, which I'm still refining and gets requested when I play live more than anything else.

I booked Pamelia Kurstin to play in Bristol as part of her tour of the UK, and briefly met Charlie Draper at the gig. After some communication with Charlie, I found myself in contact with Gordon and Kevin and ended up on here. I booked Dorit Chrysler some months later in the same venue, and I supported - this would be my first gig playing the Theremin. After the gig, Dorit told me she thought I was an "advanced" Theremin player. We travelled to London the next day so I could see her play at the Spitz, and met Gordon in person. He was nice.

A few gigs later, myself and the artist formerly known as MAIOF booked a small UK tour, I recorded an EP, it was fun. I've done a couple of radio sessions since, played a lot of gigs and now I'm in the process of booking another UK tour at the beginning of March 2008. Sooo... who wants to book me?

Wow, that's a success story!

Was this a lot of hard work? Or did you simply get lucky?

And "to write my first piece of Theremin music, Rachis & Barb"....
Can we hear that somewhere? Please?

Friendly greetings
Rens

Eh, it's not a "success story", so much as a "throwing money into a big hole in the earth and being tired all the time" story! But from the outside it looks pretty cool I guess. After this year, having been booked by some slightly heftier promoters, played some nifty artspaces, had my music used on a European film soundtrack (a film which I have yet to see) it's all starting to feel a bit more legitimate. Being an "experimental" musician in UK you're lucky if you can ever really get off the toilet circuit and I suspect for the most part I'll always be playing for pennies, but as long as I can do it I'm happy.

I'm re-recording Rachis on my new Etherwave Pro for the purposes of using it on an upcoming album which I hope to have finished and pressed in the next two weeks. I might stick the final version on Myspace, we'll see...

Well, I owe my knowledge of the theremin entirely to ooo6 who's Legend of Zelda theme from youtube wound up on one of my favorite video game news blogs. I instantly looked for more videos of it in action, and being an electronics student I NEEDED to know how it worked. My search for theremin knowledge has further reinforced my idea that Google is in fact a search engine designed by the gods. Now I'm waiting for my Etherwave to arrive and browsing a theremin forum at 2:08 AM... I think I'm slightly obsessed... Oh well! Hurrah for world thereminization!
