First build

Anyone have any recommendations for a first build? Something fairly simple and inexpensive. I am trying to get a friend hooked on theremins.

I recommend the Sillcon Chip/Jaycar kit (about 70$). It's not very tricky to build and may largely be modified/improved later as one has understood the basic principle of operation.
