I am wondering who here has actually built their own theremin (rather than just talk about it)?

Has anyone successfully duplicated the Maxie's Pages theremin?

Has anyone successfully duplicated one of Art's or Christopher's designs?

Most importantly, anyone here actually using a home-made theremin as their main instrument in any significant way, either for their own enjoyment, or for public performance?

Just curious.

I've build and to some degree modified the Jaycar/Silicon Chip Theremin referenced in Max's article.

I've also documented the project, so watch this space!

Etherspiel,

What modifications did you make, besides using your own case? I know there are articles out there on how to improve the Theremax, but it would be nice to find people who made these modifications and found them to work.

Also, has anyone here made a theremin, using Maxie's suggested modifications? I'm curious if anyone was able to duplicate his success.

Thanks,

I built one of Christopher's theremins (the ulterman, I believe) pretty much as he wrote it. I put it in a clear plastic box so the coils and electronics are visible and I've used it at a few of my friend's concerts.

If you count a theremin that's been built from only a published construction article as "scratch built", then you can see the one I made from Dr. Moog's 1954 theremin article in "Radio and Television News", in the picture of the month gallery (previous image to the current one). The parts I used were mostly vintage components, mounted in a generic steel chassis box. In addition to a couple of very scarce parts, this theremin required winding your own coils (eight different coils on four different forms, comprised of 775 turns of wire).

I built my Theremax stock, but experimented with some of the simpler mods from the PAIA webpages. They didn't seem to have any effect, so now 4 years later my Theremax is still stock. I did create a custom cabinet out of wood, and antenna hardware from solid brass.
