Theremin and pets

I am a recent owner/student of a theremin (moog etherwave). My roomate and I were talking yesterday and brought up our house rabbit (my rabbit who runs free around the house like a cat or dog) and how, if at all, he would be affected by the sound/frequency of a theremin.

My sound instructor (I study media arts) directed me to this site:

http://www.lsu.edu/deafness/HearingRange.html

However, now I'm failing to put two and two together, so I am wondering if anyone has had any experience with the relation of animals and theremins, or if it is nothing to worry about at all and we're just being silly.

Thanks!

Here's a photo of our rabbit, Banjo:

Thanks again!

I've had a number of rabbits over the years. Each has his own personality and tastes. I had one that liked to watch TV, but only if it was science fiction. Another liked to listen to music, but only if it was classical. Another kept trying to steal my fried chicken, I never did figure out why. Another would bite anyone who touched his head, except me.

I expect your rabbit will have their own personal reaction to the sound of your Theremin, and you shouldn't concern yourself with what other rabbits think of Theremins.

A friend of mine has pet parrots, he says they react interestingly to devices with complex electromagnetic devices like computers. We're planning to introduce them to a Theremin sometime. He half expects the birds will worship it. We'll take video if it's funny.

my cat doesn't seem to care one way of the other when I play, but sometimes she likes to sleep on top of my wavefront classic

My dog hates the sound of my theremin. He runs into the other room and growls. But I think it's more because of the bass and the unfamiliar sound (to him) rather than any kind of ultra-sonic noise because when I have it turned on but I'm not playing it, he's fine.

Looks like you got one of those Cherry Etherwaves? Nice!

The dog occasionally growls and barks.

The cats ignore it completely.

The cockatiel chirps.

That's about it.

One of our cats doesn't care. The other runs away on hearing the sound of a Standard Etherwave, Etherwave Pro or tVOX Tour. Paia he can stand though. And he makes no difference between Wilco or me playing or which kind of style is used.

After having my theremin for a month or so now, I'm quite sure our rabbit is just fine with it... he seems to react more to my room mate's violin, really.

Thanks for your replies so far!

Hey all,

Resurrecting an old thread about theremins and pets.  I've had my theremin for about a month, and have to lock myself away from my cat when I practice.  She seems to think there is a beast trapped inside the speaker that she either wants to play with or kill (sometimes it's the same thing w/her) -- Not too healthy for the speaker.

On the other hand, she is a music lover -- plays piano frequently -- (NO, she is NOT on YouTube.)  Maybe she just can't recognize my practicing as actual music.
