In honor of St. Valentine's Day, what do you think are the best love songs to play on the Theremin?

Good one!  I guess you could also call his cover of "Something About Us" a love song too, eh?

I'm with Kuli Schreiber, I think I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU could be very effective on the theremin......I might take a crack at it tomorrow. It would be a nice W.H. tribute. Whitney was such a beautiful woman, and what a voice!

Do they still make real love songs?  ;-)  You need to go back a ways to find many that really work well on the theremin.  Here's a few I've always enjoyed playing.  Naturally, you'll need to take some liberties with the tempo and phrasing on some to make playing easier.

Somewhere My Love (Lara's Theme - Dr. Zhivago)

Speak Softly, Love (from The Godfather)

Where Do I Begin (Love Story)

For All We Know (Carpenters)

Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Presley)

Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet (Henry Mancini)

Consuelo's Love Theme (Chuck Mangione)

(Did they really keep this simple theme going for 4:20?  Actually, 17:02...and then some... at least a quarter of the two record set in various forms.)

I Don't Know How To Love Him (Jesus Christ Superstar)

Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow (Shirelles)

Welllllll.....I tried it and it stunk! It doesn't fit the theremin at all IMNSHO. The song itself is just too weak. There's no musical "meat" in it either harmonically or melodically. I knew that before I started but I thought my brilliant theremin playing could overcome it.

As they say, "Pride cometh before a fall".

CRASH! (Picking up assorted rods & loops)

The song worked when Whitney did it because she sang the hell out of the thing. No one else that I have heard has been able to do anything interesting with it at all - even Dolly Parton's version (she wrote the song) is lacklustre. The versions that do work (more or less) are all second rate imitations of Whitney and none of them come even close to her powerful gospel/soul vocal pyrotechnics.
