Thank you gtc. Miquette and I are glad that you mentioned about the video which was quite an elaboration ;-)
Miquette plays theme of "Delicatessen"
What gtc said....The playing was pretty good...The video was entertaining, but I would have preferred to see her actually playing....The video clearly didn't match the playing...
Thank you, mollydad, for your comment. Sorry for unsyncing video. Her really synced videos are many. For example,
Bachianas Brasileiras n゚5 Cantilena on the Theremin
Sincerely,
>Not sure about this one.. ( must admit I really didnt like it! )
>It looks to me like even the real theremin isnt being "played" - as in, its synced.. Also, the technique looks "wrong" - but on this I am no expert, so I am probably wrong.. but it looks like there is almost no finger movement - everything is done using a closed hand and shifting the distance of the hand..
Fred, thank you for your comment. Actually, Miquette's tecnique is "different" because she is suffering rheumatoid arthritis for 30 years and cannot move her fingers like other thereminists. This performance method is developed by herself for about 10 years.
Sincerely,
>Apart from the fact that "Miquette" is not actually playing in the video, I found the performance very "pitchy", the sound of the instrument grating and harsh, and from the musical point of view there was no identifiable use of the volume antenna. Everything was played "mezzo forte" (medium loud) throughout.
>Using a theremin for this music brings to mind the "spooky carnival waltz" idea used so effectively by Jim Parker for the MIDSOMER MURDERS (1997) theme, and played by the late British thereminist Celia Sheen.
>The original DELICATESSEN theme (1991) was played by Lev Sipolos on the musical saw.
>Lev....hmmmmm...
Thank you for your comment, coalport.
The harsh sound and constant level of mezzo forte are intentional for this specific tune. Miquette referred to the original recording of Delicatessen theme performed by accordion.
Sincerely,
>Now that folks mention it, the technique does look a bit weird and unsynchronized. I hope it's not a "Milli Vanilli" performance.
gtc, it's true that the technique is different and unsynchronized. But it is not "Milli Vanilli" performance. Actually I have to hear her playing many times and I am suffering from the repetition of the melody! ;-)
>Milli Vanilli lipsync'd to someone else's vocal tracks and when the real singer revealed this it ended MV's career. Miquette may not be playing in the video but the recording is definitely her.
Thank you, coalport, for the comment.

Well, in that case she gets my unreserved respect.
My comment was more about the difficulty of playing without finger movement, rather than critical of the playing itself - until you enlightened the matter, I could not understand why anyone would make life so much more difficult for themselves by playing in that way!
Miquette certainly plays far better than many thereminists who do not suffer a physical handicap.
Fred.

I think Celia Sheen also played mezzo forte throughout the MIDSOMER MURDERS theme because she wanted to suggest a carnival calliope sound (and the calliope has no volume control). Have you heard the DELICATESSEN theme played by Nori Ubukata on his Eowave ribbon controller?
