B3 Deluxe Tone

Hello Everybody,

I recently purchased a Burns B3 Deluxe Theremin back in February and have been practicing about 3-4+ times a week. The one main thing I've noticed is the tone on the very low end of the scale (at the "entry" point of pitch hand) is strange sounding and not cello-like. It sounds like two wave forms , if that makes sense to anybody. A bit muddled and at times, especially at the low tone/entry point I get a sound of radio-type interference. There is a sort of sweet spot as my pitch hand gets about 3 inches away from the pitch antenna and it gets that opera singer type tone. I emailed Dan about the issue and he explained the wave shape change to me (low tone is more oblong-higher tone becomes more sine-like) which I can wrap my head around, however it's the lack of deepness in tone at the low end that has me perplexed. I've watched several video demonstrations of people playing their B3 Deluxes and they seem to be able to achieve this sought after deep cello tone. I am fairly proficient with setting/finding my zero-beat and have experimented with the theremin's height, in relation to my waist/ chest. I have moved the theremin around my apartment to various locations to make sure there is no interference from surrounding objects. Just curious if others have experienced this. Any shared observations would be beneficial.

Thank you!

Sean

Hey Christopher,

Thanks for the reply--trying to post m4a for first time on this forum-having issues....

To answer your question about the amp-yes, it has the three prong plug-B3 has stock power supply/wall wart

shadmock sound byte

What do others find in this sound byte?

Distortion is developing from somewhere?

Move the theremin to another location, it might be picking up EM interference from another piece of equipment.

Thanks Christopher!

Distortion was coming from the amp, turned down theremin volume a bit, so the meat & potatoes begins at 00:40...

Also moved the B3 around my place to a section with high ceiling and least amount of objects surrounding it. I live in an old 1920s apartment building, which may explain the noticeable EM interference. The low tone being so muddled & split sounding is what doesn't seem right. There is no sweet cello-like tone at all. I had an issue with the first power supply getting very hot to the touch and noisy, Burns sent me a replacement and the new one is quiet and not heating up. I'm no theremin virtuoso/maestro, but after watching some vids of others ( e.g. Kip Rosser, Thomas Grillo and a few other guys) I get to wondering if something is up with the tuning because this thing sounds a bit off compared to their B3 Deluxes. I emailed Dan and sent the sound byte, so I'll keep the progress posted. Thank you again for the help Christopher! (cue https://youtu.be/0iAzMRKFX3c )

*Update*

Downstairs neighbor split for a few hours, so the experiment commenced.

I ended up switching over to my 60s Univox 1221 (60ish Watt tube head) to play B3 Deluxe out of.

It sounds so much smoother than the other two amps (Chinese 10" practice amp and Moog Theremin amp).

The low tone isn't so strange/split/odd sounding as with the solid state amps.

Yeah, I know, I know-"Of course it sounds better!!!-Why didn't you bust out tube style to begin with???"

It's not always an option in apartment dwelling situations.

I'm just happy I'm able to focus on my playing/practice now.

Christopher-Thank you for your help!

**Update 2.0*

Dan Burns sent me one of their Custom Grounding Cables and my B3 Deluxe tone has been smoothed out and solved.

The strange RF that existed in the field/area of the low end notes has disappeared.

The waveform itself has been smoothed out and doesn't have the weird "raspberries" sound.

So...there it is.
