Google owns Youtube (Youtube was an independent company at the beginning, but it was bought by Google in 2006). Youtube user accounts can be (maybe it's even mandatory now, but I'm not sure) linked to a Google account.

Here's the handy direct link... easy enough to remember?

https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!forum/levnet

Is this the new "official" LevNet, or still an experiment?

I just signed up as well. Saw at the top of the page "The old Google Groups will be going away soon. Switch to the new Google Groups." Does this mean we'll have to start all over again when the "new Google Groups" is rolled out?

No. It means the user interface will be changing. When I joined I got a slightly different message - I forget the exact words, but the gist of it was "this is the new google groups, you can switch back to the old style if you want, but we will force you to accept the new interface soon anyway."

Jason, I thought this was an experiment, but it appears to be snowballing into the official new levnet. :-)

I have every levnet email since I signed up 27 Mar, 2007 (minus a few double postings and obvious spam). That's 18,252 emails.

Oh, that's great Mike. I hope when the new forum gets set up, there will be a way to maintain these as a saved archive.

If not, I'd like to have them for my own theremin archive if possible. I was very sorry when I lost all the Levnet emails that I had saved.

I'm glad to see the expected first-responsers have signed up for the LevNet google group.  The capabilities of the old discoveret site (and the mailman software version they used) was pretty text-y by today's standards.  Hopefully the new google group will serve as a listserv for those that only want that, and simultaneously provide more for the rest of us.

Woulda been nice if discoveret had warned us about the shutdown, but no matter, because:

Thankfully, Gordon has scraped together a list of posters over the last year.  MUCH better than nothing. I can send out invites to those email addresses, and plan to, but wanted to float the idea here first.

Also, Gordon discovered an archive online at an independent site where they were being automatically squirrelled away.  I think such an archive is valuable, but I completely grok the privacy concerns voiced here.  I would like to see if the archive can be harvested before it goes away.  Then maybe the archive can be hosted on the google group somehow.  This way, maybe the posts can be made available to group members but not the outside world.

I have the last ~6300 messages/threads, going back to 4/30/2007, so it goes back about as far as Mike Buffington's archive.  If CRL has messages further back than that, I would like to archive them as well.

Thoughts everyone?
