Hi Pierce, I wish I did have the earliest Levnet messages but as I said earlier in this discussion I lost everything up to November 2002 in a hard disk crash. I wonder if any of the other Levnet Oldtimers might have them. Dave Ball, Jason Barile or David Miller perhaps? These would seem to be the people most likely to have saved them.

Or I wonder if they could somehow be gleaned via the  "Internet Wayback Machine" -- http://archive.org/web/web.php

The answerpot archive was not downloadable, and scraping the postings off it would have been next to impossible. I checked this very carefully before asking them to remove it, and was pleasantly surprised by how willingly and quickly they removed it.

I checked archive.org - it was my first port of call - but it respects privacy.

Lets talk about plundering Mike and Charles' records, and any others, on levnet once the membership gets to a reasonable size and we know better how far back we can go and who we have with the technical expertise to put it into a useful form.

I assume Jason is reading this ("Where's Jason?!") and hopefully will join the new group. Maybe he can give some input on the archives issue. I do not have a current email address for David Miller. I do have one for Dave Ball and sent him an email yesterday but didn't get a reply so I don't know if it is a current email address or not.

If it does all work out, I would vote for having the archives secured with a password. That will at least keep the "low-level pests" at bay, of which we all know there are a few.......

I missed the part about your hard drive crash Charles. That's really a shame.

Since the google group looks acceptable, I will send a one-time invite to the emails that Gordon scraped, referencing the direct url mentioned above.  I'll hopefully get that done tonight.

Thanks Pierce. That will be great! I think everyone will (hopefully) be happy with the Google Groups format.
