The exhibit went away a couple of years ago. As far as I know there is no theremin exhibit set up. I will check the next time I am there. They may also have something online at www.caramoor.org

Samgar, I too discovered the theremin in a museum.

They had a hands-off exhibit and I actually got to play it.

I fell in love with the instrument immediately.

Hey everybody,

My name is Ben Aldrich and I’m a pipe organ builder in Otsego, Mi. It’s near Kalamazoo.

I became interested in the Theremin on a road trip about 4 years ago. I heard a “This American Life” story where they put together a band from classified ads in the newspaper. They picked up a thereminist. I told my wife, “I must make one.” The next Monday, I went into work and told my boss that I wanted to build a Theremin. Without hesitation, he went into his desk drawer and pulled out the schematic for Clara Rockmore’s Theremin.

It was like looking at Greek. I knew absolutely nothing about Tubes, coils, or electrical diagrams. I looked on the internet for some info on the values of all of these parts but came up empty. The project was dumped.

Last year I was looking around my deceased Granddad’s basement and came across a box of tubes. My flame was rekindled. I took them to work and had many of the tubes necessary for building an RCA AR1264 replica. I searched the internet again and found this site as well as Arthur Harrison’s sight. Mark M. had found many of the values and I was off to the races.

I have a wife and two Labs. I’ve build several other cool things like a 17-foot Kayak and a fully operational 4 X 5 field camera (like the really old ones!).

This site is cool.

Ben A.

P.S. Clara Rockmore is my Idol.

My turn I guess.
My name is Buddy Craigg.
About 29 hours ago was the first I ever heard of this magical little box.
I don’t play any musical instrument, and haven’t been able to sight read for decades.
I cant sing along with a song, or atleast I shouldn’t ;-)
I have a 1yo son and strange living arrangements with my wife.

My hobby / side income is auto repair in the evenings. I used to be a mechanic but found that I didn’t want to work on stuff when I got home. So I’ve been a parts person during the day to pay the bills for a little over 10 years. The pay isn’t as good as turning wrenches, but it probably equals out in the end.

My obsession is the Pontiac Fiero, I have three, one with a V8 that I installed which I take to car shows throughout the Midwest. And finally a 1967 Pontiac Catalina.

I don’t plan on getting a theremin for myself, but hey, if RCA says "anyone can without tiresome practice can make exquisite beautiful music with nothing but his own two hands!" I just might one day.

Stuart Gordon here.

I live in Washington DC (just down the block from the address Klaatu lived at in The Day The Earth Stood Still).

I saw someone playing a Theremin about 10 years ago and told myself that if I ever saw one for sale, I'd but it. A year or so later I bought a Paia Theremax kit.

I've been playing Theremin for about 6 or 7 years. One of the bands I used to play with gave me the stage name Dr Mayhem and it stuck, I still use it. I'm more of a "whooping it up" style player than a "traditional" player. I have an Etherwave that I run through a digital delay pedal and a Roland Space Echo (echo on top of echo - very trippy). I use a mute pedal in my left hand to create tremelo style effects and to control the delay. Over the years, I've developed my style pretty well. When playing with a band, I try to fit into the mix where a keyboard would go.

I'm currently playing with a punk rock band from Fredericksburg VA/DC called The Points. We have a CD that should be out by the end of the year. I've also played many times with the band Southern Culture on the Skids over the past 2 1/2 years.

My crowning acievement on Theremin (so far) is that I got to play with Ian Gillan of Deep Purple this past summer. I won a contest he ran through a local radio station and got to play with his band (not Deep Purple) on the song Smoke on the Water. There is a video of it up at www.youtube.com. Just type smoke water theremin into the search box and you'll find it.

Hi Stu, and welcome to Theremin World.

Enjoyed the vid. (link (http://youtube.com/watch?v=BvIHsNnqaWw)). Looks like a great time was had by all.

Roland Space Echo - mmm, nice!

I'm using a Marshall Echohead and a Danelectro PB&J, plus a healthy smattering of reverb off my amp for good measure. I also like to make with the trippy!

(My stuff here: http://myspace.com/beatfrequencyuk, currently listening to your stuff here: http://myspace.com/thepoints. Takes me back to '77. (Good vid too. I had a Rubik's Cube) :-)

Hello,

I'm pete,
I'm not too great at any instrument, Just like to have a go at anything. I have a left handed no1derland theremin on it's way. I have been facinated by this instrument for a number of years. I know i've got alot of hard work ahead. Fun and rewaring none the less.
