Hello, I'm Thomas Grillo. I'm in Jackson, Mississippi. Back in July of 06, I got a Moog Etherwave Standard theremin, and have enjoyed plying it. I've been putting in 7 to 9 hours a day, every day on it, and loving every minute.

Hi - I've been here a while but never filled a rollcall in yet. I've been a professional musician for 17ish years now - originally from Michigan USA but came to the UK as a child.

I play a lot of kinds of music - singer-songwriting, jazz, Irish, new age, electronic, world music - a musicoholic. Also a recordoholic with 37 albums out there under my own name or various bands. I love albums as a thing like some folks like books. I also like books. :-)

Been theremining for 5 years now - got an Etherwave standard, then I got an Etherwave pro when Turnkey London was selling them cheap. Tend to use the standard for small gigs and the pro for recording and more electronic, theremin-based gigs. I was ooo frustrated when I forst got my theremin - could't do a darned thing on it - sounded like a drunk swanny whsitle player for about 6months. Perseverance has payed off.

I do quite a number of recordings for a new age label and I always have a bit of fun trying to squeeze a little theremin onto each album. I probably suffered from "drummers new cowbell syndrome" early on, but now I'm happy at how the theremin fits into my orchestra of sounds recordingwise.

Top fun for me is improvising live with electronic ensembles - I organise small electronic nights. I usually hook the theremin into effects - harmonizer, small delay, possibly flanger, long delay and reverb.

At acoustic song gigs the theremin usually gets brought out for fun and foolishness.

I used to be concerned with fingering techniques and such but now I am really happy at how my muscle memory for pitches has developed quite naturally and I can now pick out a new tune in my head pretty well. I'm really beginning to see the power of the volume hand and am now working more on that. I also find I get better results from being/playing boldly (thinking like an opera singer) than timidly fishing about for pitch. Takes concentration tho.

Of all the pro thereminists out there I probably dig Barbara Buchholz playing and music the most, tho I;ve enjoyed Kavina & Kurstin & Rockmore & Schwimmer too. But the Buchholz Russia With Love album I think is a bit special.

I would like to thanks Theremin World and Spellbound Radio for their positive non-judgemental and enthusiastic inclusive atmosphere they have created and for helping to stoke the fires of my theremining imagination. Bob Moog also deserves a mention. I love the videos he made that comes with the Etherwaves. What a great guy he was.

enough waffling already

Greetings. My name is Drew and I am a college student from the great state of Ohio. My current areas of study are music technology an cognitive psychology (a bit of a divide, I know). I plan to attend grad school in whichever area takes me. I've "played" theremin for the past two years, and am probably just a few days away from blowing this semester's grocery money on one of my own. I perform with several area bands, and try my hardest to convince them that every song needs at least one theremin solo. I saw this sticky and thought I'd drop a line to all you fine theremin enthusiasts. I've got a bunch of questions I'll no doubt end up posting, so please don't get annoyed if you see a "What Theremin should I buy?" post floating around with my name on it.

Regards,

-drew

Greetings to all the recent new members! I've been re-reading everyone's introductions and it strikes me that we have a very diverse and interesting set of readers. Thanks for joining Theremin World, and please feel free to file your suggestions on how I can improve the site in the suggestion box forum.

Welcome!

Hello everybody, my name is Augusto (I'm brazilian, y'see) and I'm 16 years old, and have recently developed an interest on the theremin and am planning to build one, as well some other electronics projects, trying to learn a bit of it. Musically, I play the keyboard and am planning to pick up the violin one of these days, even though everyone keeps telling me I'm too old for it.

welcome canopus, if you were a dog you would be 77 and that would be wayyy too late to start with the violin. But since you're a 16yo human, i say why not.

The day 16 is too old to take up an instrument, is the day I call it quits. Of course unless folks are saying your too old to take up the violin they are right. you should begin violin training by 4, or it just won't take. After 4 the brain muscles revert from.....,ahh don't listen to them. i didn't start violin untill i was 20. I've learnt an instrument a year since high school. some sound good, some well....

Heh, I don't plan on listening to anyone, I'll probably be buying a violin soon, and, hopefully, building my theremin, though that's gotta wait until the the second half of march, so I can get some help at the university that's right next to my school.
