Hello Thereminworld!

My name is Alessia, I'm from Italy.

I'm a beginner with the theremin and every day begins with joy for the instrument but also a lot of questions about it.

One question that's been in my head for many days now and continues staying there without answer is: where can I put my music stand to read music while playing the Theremin?

I have a Moog Etherwave Plus.

Thank you

Where you can see it and turn the pages without being too close to the pitch antenna.

The mass of the stand will affect the playing field - just adjust the knobs so that your "notes" are where you expect them to be.

The material does not matter as much as the mass, in any case, your body has a lot more affect on the playing field than a music stand unless you are using a behemoth suitable for orchestral scores.

But music stands are for musicians.

Not thereminists!

If you can find a video of a theremin player using a music stand, do what they are doing.

False.  A huge mass of plastic won't influence a Theremin much, if at all.

"But music stands are for musicians. Not thereminists!"

False.  Jeez.

Hi Alessia,

here you can see a good position of a music stand. I think a wooden one. Carolina Eyck is (one of) the best thereminists alive.

Dewster:

A mic stand made from steel in close proximity to the theremin also doesn't affect play.

You simply have to adjust the pitch and volume knobs.

As for musicians, there is a reason that the theremin is not part of a standard orchestra or band and is regarded as an oddball instrument.

I do not fault the instrument for these issues.

It is a perfectly fine orchestral instrument, in the hands of a musician.

My efforts count for naught.

I followed your advice of adjusting the knobs and it works fine!

Thanks for your help.
