"I have wondered if long term they might produce 2 models of the CVox 1 full analogue and 1 full digital"  - gingercat

The fully digital Cvox is called a Theremini ;-)  And the negative connotation that the Theremini gave digital is perhaps why there is an analog mode in the Cvox in the first place.

They seem to be responsive to fixing the worst of the Cvox issues after the fact, but with the EW discontinued I don't get a real sense of commitment from Moog for professional grade Theremins.  My feeling is that after this Cvox wave is over they'll keep making Thereminis for a while, but that's it.  There's very little money in the field (the beauty part) and the product is more complex to manufacture, maintain, and support than most musical consumer items.

"As for a display - I think the idea was that you'd have the CVox connected to a tablet and wouldn't need a built in display. The app is actually really good at displaying all the settings before it crashes that is "

I don't have any problem with hooking an editor up to manage presets, or to ease the editing process.  But you should be able to adjust everything in there without it.  iPads and and their OSes aren't forever, apps and drivers age out, USB is a constantly moving target.  Lashing a product to personal computing devices is grabbing a tiger by the tail, and Moog can barely get the editor to work on one type of device.  If something almost demands that a tablet be connected, then a convenient dock should be built into the case.

My 3D printer has a small screen and a single encoder, it's awkward but it's a lot better than being required to hook it up to a PC or tablet or something.  Even a one line display with a single encoder would let you enable the MIDI and such on the Cvox, and could help clarify and simplify the calibration process.

I've had a Theremini. Its absolutely nothing like the modern mode in the CVox in terms of both playabaility and editing of sounds and settings. The Theremini editor is good but not a patch on the CVox one (once they iron out the bugs)

The tiny display on the theremini was fairly awful - I way preferred the editor. I have a Minilogue XD which pretty much has a knob for every function but there are times when the on screen app is better. Remember too the CVox like the minilogue uses digital control so when you set a new timbre or preset the knobs don't reflect the settings so at a glance you really have no idea what is set. but you can see all the current setting on screen[/font]

MIDI

I came across this cryptic sentense in the manual: "Claravox Centennial can play other instruments via MIDI; Claravox Centennial can
be played by other instruments via MIDI."

Yes I can send and receive MIDI data on the CVOX via midi and usb and I can play a synth from it but is it possible to play a note on the CVox from a MIDI device? I can send MIDI note data from a keyboard and I know the CVox is receiving note data because the MIDI light flahses but so far haven't been able to generate a sound.

And yup you're wondering why I would want to do that. No reason really I just like to play with stuff  But it might be a nice addition to my synth family and it would be interesting to see if the digital synth can be played from a sequencer as an addition to a synth track.

I was kind of kidding.

Being able to capture, edit, and play back a performance via MIDI is an extremely practical use case!

So … has anybody been able to play the CVox via MIDI? It would be useful to be able to access/play the CVox’s synths.

I've played round with a few things and so far no luck so I've just asked Moog Tech for clarification.

If you could play the internal synth tho how would you apply any kind of envelope? At this point I'm wondering if MIDI IN is actually to change control settings rather than play actual notes

That's how I interpret the MIDI section of the Cvox manual, the table lists parameters with no mention of note on/off, though I question how complete it is.  A one page all-inclusive chart of what is supported RX/TX (pretty standard for synths) would be nice.  (The Cvox manual and web site are chockablock with effusive, flowery language.)

A gig bag for the Claravox is supposedly in the works, according to some (I forgot who) in today's workshop.

That would be a good thing to have. I wish I hadn’t missed the workshop, is there any way to see it in recorded form?

Dorit recorded the Zoom meeting and said she's looking into making it available but I so far there hasn't been any follow-up email.
