Exhibit is largely based on the website information of Theremin player Charlie Lester. Items in the exhibit are from the collection of Scott Paulson. Theremin-like instruments built by local schoolchildren are also featured in the exhibit.
THEREMIN DOCUMENTARY SCREENING on Sunday, April 6 at 7 p.m. in the Seuss Room of Geisel Library (audience is invited to play on some theremins following the film screening).
Background: In 1920 the Russian physicist Leon Theremin demonstrated one of his most famous inventions: a musical instrument now known as the first synthesizer.
The Theremin is a unique instrument in that the musician never actually touches it. Pitch is controlled by using one hand to manipulate the space near a vertical antenna and volume is controlled with the other hand by approaching a second, horizontal, antenna.
Professor Theremin and his haunting musical instrument are celebrated with a special exhibit March 1 through April 6 on the lower level of Geisel Library. Theremin-like instruments built by local school children will be shown, as well as some of the most sophisticated theremins currently available.
A free theremin recital featuring Charlie Lester and Scott Paulson will be given at 12:30 on Wednesday, March 26 in front of the display cases. The exhibit closes on Sunday, April 6 with the showing of documentary about Professor Theremin at 7 p.m. in the Seuss Room on the main floor of Geisel Library.
Immediately after the film, the audience will be invited to play on several different Theremins and participate in a new work for audience & Theremins. All events and the exhibit are free and open to the public.
