As we all know, capacitive sensing is a well known technology. Leon Theremin postulated it would be put to all sorts of interactive uses, including lighting up the windows in department stores in New York as shoppers passed by.
Now, a recently filed patent application from Apple tells how they might be considering capacitive hover-based gestural input for devices. You can read the full patent application here, including how they suggest using an AC shield to concentrate the capacitive field behind the device and thus improve the sensor.
If this makes iPhone Theremins even more realistic, I'm all for it!
