In another case of "art imitates theremin", artist Alison MacTaggart's exhibit, "Promising Objects", at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria features a theremin housed inside an array of gourds.
We're seeing more and more of these theremin art mashups lately, but is it good for the theremin? True, it introduces more people to the concept of the theremin, but do we still need that? At some point, the masses will know about the theremin already, and installations like this will lose their novelty. People will expect something new, better, and different. When will we cross that threshhold?
On the plus side, this installation actually sounds like a theremin (as opposed to some other exhibits).
If you're in the Victoria, BC area, stop by and let us know what you think. The exhibit runs through January 15, 2012.
